The Super Bowl Legacy
Aaron Rodgers has stepped out of Brett Favre's proverbial shadow once and for all. Rodgers passed for 304 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions in the 31-25 Packer victory; and, was named Super Bowl MVP.
Green Bay jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Pittsburgh scored a field goal before Green Bay's next TD and found themselves trailing 21-3. At the end of the first half, Green Bay led 21-10, but Pittsburgh would fight back. After Pittsburgh scored a touchdown to open the third quarter, they trailed by just four points with Green Bay ahead 21-17.
The fourth quarter saw another Green Bay touchdown, but Pittsburgh responded a touchdown of their own. After adding a two point conversion, they trailed by just three points. Green Bay opposed with a field goal to take a six point lead.
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Rothlisberger had an opportunity to lead the Steelers to victory, with possession of the ball with just two minutes left. However; the drive stalled and Steeler's running back Rashad Mendenhal committed a brutal fumble, which Green Bay recovered; sealing a Packer victory.
Green Bay had not been to the Super Bowl since their victory 1997. Brett Favre was the quaterback that year. Much controversy surrounded Favre's messy exit from Green Bay in 2007. Initially Favre's legacy seemed to cloud the transition to Rodgers, as some felt Favre was still good enough to be playing.
Anyways, Rodgers has created his own legacy and the Packers are champions again. Green Bay closed the season with six consecutive victories, five of which were at their home stadium. The Packers also overcame in-game injuries; including injuries to key wide receiver Donald Driver, and all-pro defensive back Charles Woodson.
Charles Woodson joined Tony Dorsett and Reggie Bush, as three of the only players to ever to win a Heisman Trophy (national collegiate award), and a Super Bowl Ring.
