Becoming Independent

By Melissa Nicole Ocampo
On December 20, 2011

People say I was crazy for moving out of my house at 21 years of age, but for me it was time to live on my own. Ever since I turned 15, I've always wanted to start making my own money because I was tired of asking my parents for everything. In my eyes being independent equals more responsibilities and creates a much more mature individual ready for the competitive world.

Of course, many people I've graduated with still live with their parents. According to CNNmoney.com, "85% of college seniors planned to move back home with their parents after graduation."

I moved out of my parent's house the beginning of the summer of 2011, and moved in with a good friend that I met at Nassau Community College. Yes, money was tight and it still is however having the freedom that I never had is worth it to avoid all the stress. The job that I had in the beginning of the summer was my financial source for much of my rent but then they started to lose businesses and they let me go. Needless to say, I was in deep stress; luckily I had back up savings that lasted me until August.  This whole summer I was jumping from one job to another. I went on more than 20 interviews these past five months, and I haven't had one steady job.

But when I hear someone saying that it's hard to find a job, to me  they are not trying at all, or they are not willing to look outside of the box. I've had over  16 different jobs the past seven years and the one summer that was very hard for me to get a job was the summer of 09'. But what I remembered about that summer was that I really didn't look hard enough and I was in party/travel mood at that time.

It's easy for someone to just say, "I don't have money because no one is hiring." I think that's just an excuse because I know that I'm not the smartest girl in the world but I have common sense and determination to keep trying. I am just 21-years- old and have experience in every aspect of work from retail to medical, food industry, office work to floral shops. You name it; I've done it. I feel that when I was in a financial crisis I didn't care what I was doing; because I knew that any company that was hiring would give you a chance, if you showed them that you were dedicated and willing to work.
