On Thursday, February 17th, the Old Westbury Concerts Organization held its inaugural meeting. Over the course of an hour, the administrative staff of the organization explained the group's ambitious agenda.
Old Westbury students often eat at fast food places. Whether it be at the den, Mc. Donald's or Wendy's, we love fast food. However, a popular trend on the campus is going out to eat at Chipotle. Chipotle is a fast food Mexican restaurant. We all know about Taco bell and how it's good for its tacos and burritos too, but it doesn't compare to Chipotle.
Have you noticed the posters around campus advertising the formation of new groups? They seem to have a similar theme. Five new groups on campus were originated in the Counseling Center: The Dream Interpretation Group, Life-in-Transition, Mindfulness Meditation, Face ‘to' Face, and a group for parents.
Anticipation has been increasing within the Old Westbury community about the new building. Students who reside on campus see the building's progress everyday as they are walking to class. The newest addition to the Old Westbury campus is located adjacent to the existing Campus Center. Although many students are under the impression that inside this modern building there will be dormitories for students, the building, which has been under construction since last spring, will only contain classrooms as well as faculty offices.
Rumors have circulated about the structure being built between the Student Union and the Academic Village. For those of you who thought the building was going to be a mini-market, you may be a bit disappointed with the future plans for the building's use on campus. Director of Planning and Systems, Campus Capital Development, Thomas DelGiudice has helped in clarifying some of the details on the building.
During the winter mini-session, the office of resident life turned four lounges in the Woodland Halls into rooms to place students, because of dorm irregularities. Male students were placed on the second floor and females on the third, because the heat was shut off in the Academic Village dorms.
It is a situation almost every Old Westbury student has found himself or herself in, at one time or another. Standing in the same place, for what seems to be an eternity, painfully close to the person in front of you, who lucky for you, has apparently forgotten to shower that morning. Finally, after an hour of torture, you finally reach the reward you have been waiting for: handing over your life savings in the form of cash, check, money order, or credit card.
This winter, mother nature hit us with what many would consider the coldest winter ever. While some students celebrated the continuous "snow days" that delayed or canceled their scheduled
classes, many couldn't help but complain about the amounts of snow piling up. Roadways and pathways were accumulating large amounts of snow, making it difficult for students and staff to walk to or make it to classes on time.
On Wednesday February 2nd, almost 85 students attended the Chinese and Korean New Year event presented by the Asian Club and Multicultural Society. Students celebrated in the first floor lounge of Woodland Hall Three.
The celebrations at Old Westbury continued on Thursday February 3rd in the Campus Center. Over 100 students lined up to have Asian foods, bringing in the Year of the Rabbit.
Nearly 300 students walked down a 30 foot red carpet on Thursday February 3rd to attend Casino Night.
The Cyber Lounge in the Student Union room 202 was turned into a casino, with real roulette, blackjack, Texas hold em' and craps tables.
Here and There is a new exhibition, currently being shown at the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery. It is made up of three different works, that share a similar theme: the problems of acclimating to a new life as an immigrant.
Posters advertising the Casino Nigh event, held on February 3rd, were taped to walls all around campus. Written in script on the bottom of the poster stated that the dress code was "Strictly Formal Attire".
Every year, students deal with the pressures of registering, making sure they take the right courses, and getting the requirements necessary in order for them to graduate. The College at Old Westbury offers the option to take courses in between semester breaks.
"Last Laugh", a new student stand-up comedy competition is being launched on Old Westbury Television (OWTV) this semester. All faculty and students can participate with hopes of getting the last laugh.
According to "Last Laugh" coordinators, participants will first go through an audition process, and then the voting will begin, similar to American Idol.
The Student Government Association held a Town Hall Meeting at the end of March and ongoing issues of concern to OW students were discussed. The majority of the concerns involved the effectiveness of the shuttle bus and the student cafeteria. Students asked questions about the schedule of the shuttle buses and the demeanor of the drivers. Some ideas that students had were to propose a transportation fee in the tuition.
Old Westbury women's basketball team did not have the kind of year it wanted. The Panthers finished 12-13 (7-11 in conference) and failed to make the Skyline Conference Playoffs. However, there was a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy season; Krystina Agard, freshman guard for the Panthers, was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year on March 1st.
Over the past months, there has been an intense debate within the SUNY Old Westbury community regarding the quality of student programming. The Nu Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc decided to counter the argument by hosting the EGO Series. Enhancing Gentlement with Opportunties (EGO) was a three night event that discussed issues affecting African-American and Latino men and alternatives these men can use to succeed.
A rising club on the Old Westbury campus is Creation. Creation was started by a group of freshmen who met during the 2009 orientation and formed an instant bond. Creation was picked as the name for this club because they wanted to make something that would be positive and different. The three founding members of Creation are Victor St. John (President), Malik Wylie (Vice President), and Dozie Osundu (Treasurer).
SUNY College Old Westbury is the most diverse college among national liberal arts colleges in 2008, according to U.S. News and World Report. The school hosts foreign exchange students from all over the world and is currently home to thirteen exchange students from China. While many students may find enrolling in college and moving into residence halls a difficult task, Annie and Pauline, two Chinese foreign exchange students at Old Westbury, beg to differ.
On February 18th, President Calvin O. Butts III presented the College's long awaited strategic plan. The Old Westbury Strategic Plan: 2010-2015 was created after a year-long process that included input and participation from each constituency of the campus: students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, council members and foundation members.
