Resources in the Counseling Center

The Office of Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services found in the Student Union, Suite 100 offers many resources to students. Clinical psychologists, Dr. Trisha Billard and Dr. Oren Shefet  said that the  center offers individual counseling, student groups, crisis support, and psychological diagnostic testing.

Why would students visit the Office of Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services? Shefet stated, “Everyone in their lives encounters problems…some longer lasting, others periodical.” He explained that the psychologists aim is  “to help the students overcome their problems and understand themselves.”

Billard added that sometimes students feel stuck, and as a result feel their problems are unworkable.  She believes that subconsciously, people know more than they think they do.

Billard and Shefet both theorized however, that stigmas about counseling could prevent people from going to their offices. The misconception is that only “weak” or “crazy” people would visit the Counseling Center. Shefet stated, “Everyone…has problems…trying to look actively to solve those problems is a sign of strength.” Billard elaborated by stating that it takes “courage to use one’s resources,” and it is not a sign of weakness. “People come here for mental illness and life problems,” Shefet stated, “We are equipped to help both.”

Confidentiality could also be an issue stopping students from visiting the office. Dr. Billard and Shefet said that they are obligated under the American Psychology Association and under New York State law to be confidential. For instance, if the dean were to ask about a specific student, the office would have to remind the dean that they cannot answer any questions.

Looking to the future, Billard and Shefet made some important announcements concerning future programs. As of now, there are three groups being offered; meditation, dream interpretation, and a sexual health group. Billard, who leads the meditation group, says the purpose is to help provide peacefulness, promote inner awareness, and cope with external and internal stress. The meditation group will meet in the office on Thursdays 5:00 PM-6:00 PM. Dr. Shefet, who leads the dream interpretation group, explained the purpose of the dream group is to help students understand what their dreams mean in order for students to better understand themselves. Billard and Shefet announced there will soon be an ADD/ADHD group and a substances group.

The biggest announcement Billard and Shefet revealed to the Catalyst was that of the upcoming “stress-free zone.” The stress-free zone is a new room in progress, with information and light therapy, among many other things, that will help students unwind from the grind.

As a parting announcement and invitation, Billard and Shefet wanted to make clear that they are available for consultation, and if one is curious about the office, they are welcome to come visit them and talk. They also stated that they “are a great resource for any club or student group who wishes to do any activity promoting mental health, psychology, or general well-being.”
