FOX recently created a new show called “New Girl” which premiered this September 20th. The new show stars actor and musician, Zooey Deschanel, who plays the role of Jess, a quirky young woman who moves in with three guys after a recent breakup. Throughout the first episode, Jess is grieving about her breakup while trying to maintain her philosophy of singing her way through life.
We are introduced to the three male roommates, who create somewhat of a balance in the house. Nick plays the troubled romantic. Coach is the athletic gym trainer whose only experience talking to women involves yelling at them. Lastly is Schmidt, whose only concerns are women and trying to be in with the “cool crowd.” The episode continues on with Jess starting to form a bond with the guys, with a few jokes thrown in for entertainment.
The show was definitely funny, with Jess singing and doing random little dances, and the awkwardness the guys had to face while Jess goes through her breakup. However, the plot of the show seems pretty cliché. I can already predict that the romantic Nick might eventually develop feelings for his female roommate; it seems almost inevitable. I’m not exactly sure what to expect from the show, besides a few laughs.
For those people who find themselves bored and looking for a little laugh, this show would be a good place to find that. As far as compelling storylines and consistency, forget it. The unoriginal plot of the show has probably been done before. Viewers will probably grow tired of the show and even the characters before the first season’s end.
