Accounting Award

Old Westbury’s accounting students took first place for the third time in a row in a competition sponsored by the Margolin, Winer & Evens accounting firm on November 1st, 2011 at Adelphi University.   The competition involved five schools: Old Westbury, Briarcliffe , Molloy, Adelphi, and New York Institute of Technology. Dr. Cary Lang was the coordinator of the team of five to represent SUNY Old Westbury in the competition.  Included in the competition were questions about ethics, tax, auditing, and financial accounting.

Representing Old Westbury were Laura Cassiere of New Hyde Park; William Murphy of Smithtown; Piyush Patel of Bellport; Yachna Rani of Plainview; and Sharon Shelton of Smithtown.  Peter Lucido, chair of the accounting department, explained the goals and aspirations of the accounting department: “Our main thing in the school of business right now, is we’re shooting for AACSB accreditation. That is something that the entire department is involved in trying to reach. It’s a very prestigious accreditation.  Only a very small number of business schools have that accreditation.”

“This success serves as evidence of what we at the Old Westbury and our School of Business alumni already know: that our students are among the best-prepared to succeed in the field of accounting,” said College President Calvin O. Butts, III.  “Congratulations to these students and to our faculty for proving that they have what it takes to again be the Long Island College Accounting Challenge champions.”

“Winning the College Accounting Challenge for the third time is a result of the continuous improvement process which we started in 2006,” said School of Business Dean NJ Delener. “This process ensures students and other stakeholders that the SUNY Old Westbury School of Business is providing a top-quality education.”

For the victory, the College will receive a commemorative trophy and each team member will win a $300 American Express gift card.
