Surviving the MTA

Have you ever dreaded the thought of riding on a Metropolitan Transportation Authority train during the rush hour from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m?  I do. But  I had ideas to avoid the first half of the morning frenzies.

My first solution was to  take the Long Island Railroad. It was perfect, quick, five minutes away from my house, but it became too costly. I then decided to drive my car closer to the city and park next the train station. This would cut my travel time in half from 45 minutes on the train to 15-20 minutes. However by the end of the week my gas consumption was high and I was shelling out more money on gas. My third solution, which was more cost effective and stress free  was to start my workday at 10 a.m. This was the best solution because I would miss the first half of the rush hour crowd and always could find a seat.  But after a week, I started to realize that I would still find the craziness on train. Therefore, I thought  of  rules to that  other passengers should follow to lessen  my dread and anxiety.  My top ten “Do’s and Don’ts”:

1.      Do not polish you nails on the train.

2.      Do not clip your nails on the train.

3.      Do not floss your teeth.

4.      Do not try to put on your makeup on the train standing, or sitting.

5.      Wear headphones when playing music on your phone, IPhone, mp3 player, IPad, or Ipod.

6.      Do not give your bag its own seat.

7.      Do not brush or comb your real or fake hair on the train.

8.      Do not sing out loud or put on a show no one cares.

9.      Do not breastfeed (this was seen on the LIRR mid-morning).

10.    If your food has an odor do not eat it on the train (you are not in a restaurant).
