The Clark Athletic Center has been renovated. The area which has undergone a significant amount of change is the fitness center. The new fitness center looks completely different than it did two years ago. Then it was outdated and looked very unkempt with broken weight equipment, missing weights, and an overall appearance that appeared borderline unsafe.
The new fitness room additions include such things as new paint , two brand new televisions, a long horizontal mirror for one of the walls, two new sets of dumb-bells (one metal set ranging from 5-50 lbs and one rubber set ranging from 5-100 lbs), a new elliptical machine, a new fly/rear delt machine, and a new computer based identification check-in system. These necessary upgrades have completely transformed the fitness center, and have made it a great place for every student to get into shape.
For the most part, the students at SUNY College at Old Westbury have taken notice of these new changes. “There has been a significant increase in the number of students using the fitness center,” stated Jeff Labiento, the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country as well as the coordinator of the recreation and intramural programs at SUNY college at Old Westbury. His love for fitness attracted him to the fitness center from the start of his career here and since then, he has been the “go to guy” at the center.
Labiento added that the center “starts to get busy around 4:00 pm for a little while, then tapers off , and then picks back up towards the evening when most full time day students are completed with their days, looking to relieve some stress.”
The new appearance has done more than make the students who use it inclined to become more frequent “gym rats.” It has brought a new sense of pride to an old and run down athletic facility that students had to some degree lost hope in. The athletic facility at SUNY College at Old Westbury is quickly becoming the “talk around campus,” and with its new appearance, people are feeling more fit, both, physically, and mentally. There are numerous ways for students to get into shape within the confines of the center which has a state-of-the-art athletic complex including a gymnasium with basketball courts, a weight room, the fitness area, and a number of racquetball courts. There are also facilities within the athletic complex for people to change. There are two public locker rooms, two private security locked sports locker rooms, and an athletic trainer’s office, which can be a place to receive treatments before or after an exercise period.
If you would like to get into shape and use the new upgraded fitness center it is located in the Clark Athletic Center, next to the Natural Sciences Building, and it is open Monday – Thursday: 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM, Friday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Saturday: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, and Sunday: 5:00 PM-11:00 PM.
