Thoughts and Advice After Seven Years in the Real World

I am not a new student, but a returning one. I came to SUNY Old Westbury in 1999 after high school.  By 2004, I knew it all and yet nothing at the same time.

My last year here was 2004 and I never walked at graduation. There was no celebration, no diploma and no cap toss. I thought that I would be able to make it in the real world and thought that I would be just fine. Boy was I wrong. From the time that I left until present day, I have had nothing but dead end jobs ranging from telemarketing to data entry, and in my final and most glorious moment I was a security guard at Macy’s. None of those previous jobs would ever bring me to where I want to be for myself or my children. From one unfulfilling job to the next, I finally was able to come back to the original, right decision. It is with that notion; I am back and writing today.

As a student here at Old Westbury, I have many great memories. The professors that I had were all original in their own ways and always willing to lend a hand or provide further insight. Returning, it is nice to see that has not changed. There are a lot of things in life that can be difficult, the curriculum included. Here at Old Westbury there are always options for help and facilities to go to where your issues and concerns can be addressed. For example, the Math Learning Center offers tutoring in all math courses and pre-calculus, the Writing Center offers free writing assistance for all students.  If you’re struggling with any papers you’re not alone. If you need help it’s there for you.

I have met and still remain friends with many of my former classmates. There is a saying “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy,” and it is true. I would never steer a path that didn’t have fun, but there is always a happy medium. I doubt anyone needs advice on how to have fun, so here is my advice on what you need to do in order to have fun as well as succeed. Be responsible when it comes to your classes. First, this means getting to class on time and attending your classes regularly. This will teach you respect for your professor as well as your fellow students.  Your presence in the classroom will also allow you to remain on the same level as your fellow students. If you are constantly absent, believe me, your only cheating yourself. When you have deadlines always meet them. Starting early and being efficient when it comes to your assignments will help you get it all done on time. Waiting until the last minute to do everything will only cause stress, and worrying and most likely poor grades from the overload. Learn how to balance your school work and leisure time. This was difficult for me when I was a freshman. I didn’t appreciate the value of school. I didn’t realize until I left school how important it was for my future endeavors.

This time around, I will be sure to follow my own advice.
