During the winter mini-session, the office of resident life turned four lounges in the Woodland Halls into rooms to place students, because of dorm irregularities. Male students were placed on the second floor and females on the third, because the heat was shut off in the Academic Village dorms. Although it was only for three weeks, students did not expect to be placed in the lounges.
The heat was shut off in the Academic Village, not only to save money but to save energy. This could have been told to the students before they had decided to stay on campus for the winter mini-session. If they had the choice, some would not have stayed, but the students weren’t given proper time to make that decision before paying their bills.
The office of resident life expected the number of students taking winter courses, but did not expect the numbers of students wanting to reside on campus to be so high. They could not place students in the Academic Village, with no heat. Complaints about that would have been even greater from students and parents. Financial aid does not help students cover housing during winter or summer sessions.
There were no major complaints from students during the temporary situation. Hopefully, if it happens again, residential life will know how to go about.
