When Image Means Everything: the Do's and Don'ts of Interview Wear

Have you ever seen someone going for a job interview and you ask yourself what are they wearing and why? This weekend I defiantly had a sore eye for work place fashion.. I had the privilege of assisting a friend of mine on her first job interview and was horrified with the wardrobe attire there. As some people came in very professional and well-put together, others were unprepared. In the waiting room I saw men with jeans,t-shirts and working boots. Women came in with leggings, club wear, and flip flops. Even though they weren't the majority, it makes you question where did these people go wrong and what can we do to help?

     Well, look no further as I break down the do's and don'ts for both men and women on how to present themselves on that crucial day:

     Men remember it's important to invest in a good suit. Neutral colors are always fine. I recommend a white collar shirt, a simple tie with matching handkerchief and stylish dress shoes. Make sure that when wearing a jacket/blazer your collar sleeves should be a half inch to one inch past the jacket. If it's any longer that's due to tailoring or having a small shirt. If you don't have funds, for a new suit, slacks in a neutral color with a basic collar shirt, tie and shoes will also do. Avoid wearing plaid suits, tuxedos or sneakers to an interview. The goal is to get the job, not lessen your chances.

     Women remember to wear neutral color suits. Whether it's a pants, skirt, or dress suit all are fine as long as they fitted and well hemmed. I recommend a white collar shirt, light make up and very few accessories. You never want to overpower your wardrobe and if wearing a skirt or dress makes sure the length covers your tights when seating because that's what your interviewers see. Remember longer is better. Basic simply pumps around three to four inches in solid colors are great. Avoid wearing hair in the face, bright nail polish and

heavy perfume.

     It's essential to do your research and prepare yourself. Remember image is imperative.
