Creation on the Rise
A rising club on the Old Westbury campus is Creation. Creation was started by a group of freshmen who met during the 2009 orientation and formed an instant bond. Creation was picked as the name for this club because they wanted to make something that would be positive and different. The three founding members of Creation are Victor St. John (President), Malik Wylie (Vice President), and Dozie Osundu (Treasurer). Also working on the executive board are Tamika Daniel (Secretary), the public relations team includes, Jonathon Petion, Brittany Green and other members of the club. Though the club was started by freshmen, and mostly ran by freshmen, Creation is open to anyone.
Creation's motto is, "comfort equals success." This quote is explained more on the club's website (owcreation.weebly.com). To succeed you have to be comfortable with the environment around you. Transitioning from high school to college, you may feel it would be hard to figure out where or how to get help for problems you may be having. Creation is trying to make people gain the comfort in a college environment they need to succeed.
The first program hosted by Creation was "The Show," an introduction to the club in November of 2009. In addition, the group talked about issues occurring on this campus. They then started off the spring semester with a Valentine's Day social titled, "Love in the Lounge." Students were able to mix and mingle through speed dating and a mini game show. "Creation appears to be a group of young minds who are trying to bring a different feel to programming," said Alexis Grafakos, a junior at Old Westbury.
The president of Creation, Victor St. John, stated, "We're still learning and we're on a great playing field. Even though we came in as freshmen there's a lot of room to grow. We're loaded with potential, that's not a problem." Overall Creation seems to be a favorable club to the Old West community. Junior resident, Trevor Ceaser, like others, think Creation is a, "cool group with good values and good leadership."
Grafakos also said, "It would be really disappointing to see the campus label them as a "useless" club on campus, when they actually have a lot to offer." Creation was off to a rocky start as a new club with no budget, but has made it work. They have many ideas already rolling for the 2010-2011 school year. If the club continues stays true to their mission they can be a model of excellence for future clubs.
